Research has uncovered that this mystery woman's name was Martha A. McCullough. She was born in Londonderry, Ireland in 1885 and immigrated to the United States on May 22, 1904. She studied medicine in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, prior to arriving in Dubuque in 1912, the same year this photograph was taken. At this time, her doctor's office was in the Fischer Building on 909 Main Street. One year later, on October 22, she married Nicholas John Link. He was a dentist, and they both resided and practiced on 1308 Clay Street, which is current day Central Avenue. The rest of her life is unknown, besides the fact that she died on December 4, 1944 and was buried in Hanover, Iowa.
As a group, you will uncover more information surrounding the time period of this picture. You will find out about the technology that she would have used, what life was like for her as a female doctor, and what life was like for patients during that time. You will then compare that information to present day life.
Look at the picture closely. What can you infer about her life?
